Introduction

Warnings and Considerations

WARNING! Use Geotab telematics devices only with Geotab-approved harnesses acquired from Geotab-authorized channels. Use of non-Geotab harnesses from unauthorized channels can cause serious safety risks, including fire, and can lead to serious personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle.

! IMPORTANT: For heavy-duty trucks, always use a vehicle-specific harness when offered by Geotab or the vehicle manufacturer (see Harness Identification and Application ) and this document. Where a heavy-duty truck-specific harness is not offered by Geotab or the vehicle manufacturer, use the adapter harness (HRN-CG13S1) for any 16-pin (OBDII) installation method to avoid possible GO device damage.

! IMPORTANT: The State of California currently prohibits Installing HRN-GS16K2, HRN-GS09K2, HRN-GR09K1, and HRN-BD16S5 in a manner that relocates the in-vehicle diagnostic connector. The following documents provide guidance on installing harnesses using a direct plugin installation method without relocating the data link connector:

HRN-GS16K2 Installation - Direct Plug-In

HRN-GS09K2 Installation - Direct Plug-In

HRN-GR09K1 Installation - Direct Plug-In

Alternatively, GO devices can be installed directly into the OBDII port using an extension/conversion harness that plugs directly into the OBDII port or other emissions diagnostic data link connector port. For more information on Geotab harnesses and adapters, see Harness Identification and Application.

! IMPORTANT: For heavy-duty trucks, always use a vehicle-specific harness when offered by Geotab or the vehicle manufacturer (see Harness Assessment Cheat Sheet GUIDE V2.0 and this document). Where a heavy-duty truck-specific harness is not offered by Geotab or the vehicle manufacturer, use the adapter harness (HRN-CG13S1) for any 16-pin (OBDII) installation method to avoid possible GO device damage.

✱ NOTE: If a longer length is required to facilitate installation, connect a straight harness to a T-harness or another straight harness — where indicated below. The total harness length must not exceed 2 meters (or 6.5 feet).

✱ NOTE: Regardless of the length, two T-harnesses CANNOT connect to each other. Connecting two T-harnesses, or any two harnesses that exceed 2 meters, compromises the integrity of the data and may cause issues with the vehicle’s Engine Control Unit (ECU).

! IMPORTANT: Some vehicles have multiple diagnostic connectors to choose from when installing a GO device. For further information to compare and contrast OBDII and RP1226, please visit the following link: https://gtb.page.link/hKF7.

    • Some installations are not straightforward and must be completed by an Authorized Installer to ensure a secure installation.

    • Ensure to use many cable ties to secure both the device and harness to the vehicle. An unsecure device installation can result in poor electric and/or data connections that can lead to short circuits and fires or cause malfunctions of vehicle controls that can result in serious personal injury or significant damage to your vehicle.

    • Some examples requiring professional installation from an Authorized Installer are:

    • The OBD port location is such that the device could protrude or interfere when entering or exiting the vehicle, or located where it can be inadvertently kicked or bumped during vehicle operation. The device isn't fully secured and so may be able to vibrate loose or get kicked or knocked. An electrical harness or additional wiring is required.

    • Vehicle mounting modifications are required to secure the device i.e. removing of panels, or the OBD connector has been deformed/damaged or there is any physical damage visible to the electrical wiring.

    • The device does not power on and beep six times when first installed.

    • The installer questions their ability to complete a secure installation according to these instructions.

    • Do not attempt to install, reconfigure or remove any product from a vehicle while the vehicle is in motion or otherwise in operation. All installation, configuration or removal must be done only in stationary vehicles which are securely parked.

    • Attempting to service devices while the vehicle is in motion could result in malfunctions or accidents, leading to death or serious personal injury.
